Mountains of the Mist

Mountains of the Mist captures that moment when mountains seem to appear and disappear inside cloud, snow and drifting mist. The upper part of the painting is quiet and almost weightless, with pale veils of white, grey and soft blue suggesting cloud moving across distant snow-capped ridgelines and glaciers.

As the eye travels downward, the landscape becomes more exposed and physical. Layers of rock, ice and earth tumble through the centre of the painting, revealing warmer ochre, clay and rust tones beneath the colder surface. It feels as though the mountain has been cut open by weather, rockslides and moving ice, allowing the ancient earth underneath to show through.

At the base, the mood changes dramatically. Deep brown-black areas suggest dense forests, shadowed valleys and steep mountain walls where the light can no longer reach. I particularly like this contrast. The painting begins almost romantically in cloud and mist, then gradually reveals that this is not a gentle landscape. There is height, instability and danger beneath its beauty.

The long portrait format strengthens that feeling of looking both up into the mountains and down into their depths. The sweeping paint marks through the centre create movement, almost like glaciers, avalanches and weather have been passing through the landscape for thousands of years.

For me, the high alpine mountains are present here not as a literal view, but as a remembered or imagined landscape: ancient, beautiful, partly concealed and slightly forbidding. The mist softens what lies there, but it never completely hides the mountain beneath.

This painting is a very modern, contemporary abstract work that would look fantastic hanging in your home.
