“Graffiti Without Words” 

Graffiti Without Words grew from my fascination with marks that communicate without needing to become language. Across the square surface, abstract shapes, fragments, lines and loosely drawn characters appear almost like an invented alphabet. Some resemble graffiti symbols, ancient signs or pieces of writing whose meaning has been forgotten. They invite the viewer to recognise something without ever quite being able to read it.

The painting has been built through many layers. Earlier shapes and marks have been painted over, partly erased and then allowed to reappear through the surface. This gives the work its sense of history. I think of city walls where generations of graffiti artists leave images over earlier images, and of ancient rock surfaces where people returned over centuries to make new marks amongst those already there. Nothing is completely lost. Traces remain.

The heavily worked white surface acts almost like a wall that has been repeatedly painted, weathered and repainted. Against it, vivid orange, cobalt blue, black and touches of green and yellow push forward, disappear, and surface again. Some forms feel architectural, others spontaneous and gestural. There are little windows, enclosures, crossings and signs scattered throughout the painting, as though fragments of different stories have accumulated in the same place.

For me, Graffiti Without Words is about the human impulse to make a mark: I was here. I saw this. I left something behind. The words themselves may be absent, but the surface remembers.
